So, I had the privilege of getting to be at the Conde Nast Publications building yesterday as part of a media tour for work and it turns out this week was FASHION WEEK (Spring 2010 NY Fashion Week to be exact). As many of you know one of Conde Nast magazine's is the infamous VOGUE. Its editor, Anna Wintour, was the inspiration for the Meryl Streep character in "The Devil Wears Prada" and it was this building where some of movie scenes were shot. I tell you all that to say that when I told a friend I was at Conde Nast during fashion week, she about flipped with excitement. "You were in Anna Wintour's house DURING fashion week!!?..OMG". I was a bit more excited about seeing the CBS News Desk where Katie Couric does her news and the sports desk where NFL Today is based, but to each their own right?
Back to Fashion Week. So, apparently this is THE week where all of the fashion world clamors to see what are the latest trends for the next season (spring in this case). What will be hot? Are shoulder pads really coming back into style (say it ain't so!)? What is the latest trends in the world of snuggies (yea, they even had their own show this week...by the way the answer to that is tie-dyed). Headlines will be made and the world of fashion will whirl into production on what they believe to be the next big thing.
So what are the "next big things" in Marketing? What is to become of the social media craze happening? Now that mainstream companies are taking to facebook and twitter, what will be the next "in thing?" Marketing, advertising and PR have changed so much over the past decade. What works now would be unheard of just 5 years ago.
One trend to continue will definitely be "GREEN, environmental consciousness". How does your marketing plan fulfill your company's eco-policy? Are direct mailers going to be taboo or are companies using recyclable papers to be perceived as being more environmentally sensite, but still churning out mailings? How does GREEN fit into your marketing plans and policies?
Will the marketing budgets purse strings open up a bit more or will they be kept tight? What can you do to create value with limited budgets? Are you doing enough now so when the economy bounces back you are still top of mind to your customers?
What trends will we see here in Connecticut? For one, the fact that ten-digit dialing will be the law coming December (that's only 3 months away) will certainly create new marketing opportunities and cost companies a lot of time and money to make the transition. What is your company doing to get ready for this? Does it provide a new marketing opportunity for you? Have you even thought of the implications?
